About 34 Mayfair
Opened by Richard Caring in November 2011, 34 Mayfair is located in the heart of Mayfair. With its polished oak parquet, soft lighting and colourful contemporary art collection, it has elegance, sophistication and a royal feel to it. Martin Brudnizki Design Studio’s inspiration for 34 Mayfair involved English, Edwardian and Art Deco styles. A great deal of time was spent sourcing and creating bespoke items for the restaurant. This included the Turnbull, a wonderfully practical but equally beautiful copper and silver vessel adorned with bull’s heads to keep the steaks warm on the table. Steak knives were sourced in France (they were just stunning), while linen is brought in from Italy. The napkin rings, Edwardian-style lamps, crystal rock glasses, onion ring holders and ice buckets (both complete with bulls’ heads) and menu covers are all bespoke.
Cuisine
Head Chef Harvey Ayliffe’s modern, seasonal menu with international influences is based around meat (thank God vegenuary is over!). Classing itself as a “grill” restaurant, the centrepiece of the kitchen is a bespoke charcoal grill, also known as a parrilla, imported from Argentina, which is fed by natural fuels. Beef plays an important role at 34 Mayfair and includes Bridge of Allan dry-aged grass-fed, A5 Japanese Wagyu, USDA prime, and pure heritage breeds from nutrient-rich limestone meadows in the Yorkshire Dales. There is also a great selection of seasonal game and fish plus a wonderfully diverse wine list.
Lunching in style
We have started our lunch with champagne, which was served in a beautiful Art Deco glass. The menu is diverse and includes dishes like burrata & raf tomato salad, roasted Jerusalem artichoke soup and Paleto Iberico de Bellota. For starters, I went for the yellow fin tuna tartare with shaved black Perigold truffle. Perigold truffle is known as the Black Diamond of Perigold, and it is famous for intense earthy flavour and high price ($100 an ounce). It was definitely worth it! Alexander (Lux Afrique CEO) prefered the scallops, served in a broth. Smooth and refreshing! When it came to the aims, the steak was the only option for me – ‘when in Rome…’. I chose the USDA Prime fillet with chips and bearnaise sauce. The meat was so delicious, that I did not even need the sauce. Alex stayed on the fish route and opted for Indonesian spiced stone bass with shrimp fried rice, chilli and ginger dip. It was flavoursome and filling! Onto my favourite part – desserts. Hazelnut Rocher was the one for me!
