Okapi is a South African brand founded by painter Hanneli Rupert has been showcasing luxury leather goods since 2008. The company focuses on luxurious handbags and accessories, which are all locally produced. Okapi combines outstanding quality and craftsmanship, with the vision of creating a unique African look.
“Okapi products are luxurious and unique. They are built to last a lifetime and designed to grow with their owner in meaning and character over time.” – Okapi
Much of the company’s influence stems from Art Noveau aesthetic, magic, mysticism and reverence to nature. The company was named after the elusive antelope also known as the ‘African unicorn’ as it was discovered in the anthological era of African exploration, which is still relevant today.
Hanneli Rupert was also influenced by merging elements of tribal and exotic, which is seen through her collections.‘ All bags have been designed to be easily customisable so that they become expressive of their owner’.
In addition to all materials being locally sourced, the designer hand selects all partners, ensuring that she only works with the best. This has also helped create and develop valuable skills and job opportunities in South Africa. From start to finish of production the luxury brand ensures all bags are entirely traceable, sustainable and ethically sourced.
Overtime the collections have evolved with the range of textures, shapes and materials making Okapi bags perfect for all occasions.
The newest piece to be added to the collection is named the Aziri. The Aziri handbag is a sophisticated tote that has taken inspiration from the Goddess of love, who protects women from harmful pairings. Like many of Rupert’s pieces, this particular bag is available in a range of colours, one being Forest Green. This limited edition bag is made from genuine Ostrich leather, springbok horn, blesbok suede lining as well as hand-stitched details.
Crocodile, Zebra print and Springboks are just a few of the materials that feature throughout the Okapi collections. Other materials such as Blesbok and Springbok horns have been used as a signature design for Okapi‘s bags, making each bag special.
The fact the company uses such high-quality exotic materials mean that no bag is the same, as each bag is handmade from a range of changeable fabrics. Over time, the leathers develop its patinas leaving the bags to age with beauty. There are also only a limited number of Okapi bags made each year, which is another reason these bags are such unique pieces.
Alongside the luxurious handbags, there are some premium accessories; one being the Ostrich feathers, which features an 18 carat gold plated handmade hardware, creating the perfect statement accessory for a handbag.
Okapi also has accessories for men. The Billford wallet is made by skilled South African artist and is timeless in design. There are also cardholders, produced in some striking leathers.
