Geländewagen personifies the indomitable. What started as a Mercedes-Benz military vehicle project in the 1970s has evolved into one of the most desirable and characterful luxury SUVs. And one you never have to make any excuses for.
Despite its Cold War roots, Mercedes-Benz’s marketing people have been amazingly skilful in keeping the Geländewagen relevant. The boxy styling is deeply charming. Although Geländewagen’s retro appearance is foundational to its appeal, it contains all the modern active safety features and digital device synching you’d expect from a Mercedes-Benz.
The Geländewagen is available in various configurations, with a choice of diesel and petrol engines. There’s even a battery-powered version due to launch in 2024. But the one you really want is the AMG G63 4×4². And yes, that ‘squared’ symbol in the nomenclature isn’t accidental.
Mercedes-Benz might be most associated with its luxury limousines and sportscars, but the German brand has a history of hardcore 4×4 vehicles. Its Unimog trucks serve the most demanding logistics and firefighting purposes deep in Africa. And Unimog is the inspiration for AMG G63 4×4²’s formidable off-road capability.
Featuring special portal axles, the AMG G63 4×4² has a stance, unlike any other luxury SUV. It has 350mm of ground clearance, to roll confidently over even the most challenging terrain. To put that in context: Toyota’s legendary Land Cruiser 4x4s have only 235mm of ground clearance.
Beyond the imposing presence and military-grade off-road ability, the AMG G63 4×4² version of Mercedes-Benz’s most charming model range is wonderfully luxurious too. And very quick.
Powered by a proven 4-litre turbocharged V8 engine, boosting 430kW of power, it’s much quicker than it looks. And the speed doesn’t compromise its ability to take the shortest route between two points, even if there are mountains and rivers between.
All Geländewagens are hand built in Austria, which accounts for the exquisite cabin quality and those plush, quilted leather seats. All-terrain adventure driving doesn’t come any more stylish, luxurious or capable, than an AMG G63 4×4².
