On today’s car market, full-size luxury SUVs are the equivalent of the most opulent executive sedans. The concept of an SUV with the features of a luxurious sedan is so lucrative that even Bentley entered the game with the Bentayga. Cadillac Escalade and Range Rover have dominated the market for a long time, and Mercedes-Benz has the GL-Class. Soon, Audi will introduce the Q8, and BMW just introduced the Concept X7 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
As BMW’s flagship SUV, the Concept X7 debuted with a new dramatic design that clearly aims at Range Rover’s customers.. The signature kidney grille takes up most of the front end and it is the defining feature of the car. There are some visual cues coming from BMW 7 sedan, like side chrome trim, and from the i series too. The design of LED headlights give Concept X7 the aggressive look of the i8, but on a much larger scale. All in all, the exterior design of the Concept X7 is a departure from the current BMW design language, and it looks truly imposing. The production X7 will be based on the 7 Series platform, but we can expect the X7 to be considerably bigger.
BMW Concept X7 offers high-tech interior and hybrid power
As expected, the minimalist interior follows the angular design of the exterior. The whole feel on the inside is clean and space-age. 21st century luxury comes in various shapes and with Concept X7, BMW is all about drawing inspiration from the future. Hide and brushed aluminum dominate the inside, and this luxurious spaceship on wheels will have three rows of seats. Connectivity is the interior’s leitmotiv, and a 12.3″ touchscreen infotainment is dominating the dashboard. The central infotainment also links to touchscreens on the headrests for the back passengers.
The performance of the Concept X7 is hybrid, with the charging port on the front left fender. For now, it’s not clear what engines will power the production X7, but hybrid power will definitely be available. Although iPerformance models use turbo six-cylinder engines, we can probably expect V8, and even V12 power too. An SUV that heavy has to have enough horses, and whether it’s hybrid or not, we can expect BMW to deliver sublime performance.
The pricing for the X7 isn’t available since there’s no exact information about the production model. We currently know is that the production X7 will be introduced in early 2019. Until then, we can just marvel at the new BMW flagship SUV and its opulence.
